Meet The Attorney

Julia P. Kuan handles and supervises the firm’s diverse litigation practice which includes civil rights, criminal defense, personal injury, childhood sexual abuse, and workplace discrimination cases. She has obtained multi-millions of dollars in settlements and verdicts on behalf of her clients in civil rights and damages actions and obtained acquittals, appellate reversals, and post conviction relief for clients charged with and convicted of serious criminal charges. Many of Ms. Kuan’s civil and criminal cases are high-profile matters that have garnered considerable media attention. Prior to founding her former law firm Romano & Kuan, Ms. Kuan worked at the Legal Aid Society, Office of the Appellate Defender, and the Bronx Defenders. At those public defender organizations, Ms. Kuan tried countless jury and bench trials and argued appellate cases before the Appellate Division and Court of Appeals in the State of New York. At the Bronx Defenders, she held the position of Supervising Attorney, training and supervising a team of criminal attorneys, investigators and social workers while continuing to try cases and carry a significant felony caseload. In 2018, Ms. Kuan was added to the prestigious roster of the New York Metro Super Lawyers section of civil rights practitioners and named one of the Top Women Lawyers in New York. Ms. Kuan is a former adjunct clinical professor of criminal law at City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law. She received her law degree from New York University (NYU) School of Law in 1991 and her bachelor’s degree from New York University, College of Arts and Sciences in 1988. Ms. Kuan also speaks Mandarin.
